The truth of the matter is that Solar Do Castelo has been continuously sought out by many couples for a romantic stay in a tranquil environment. The reason for this may be due to its location - it is the only hotel within the walls of Castelo de São Jorge [São Jorge Castle], or maybe due to its size - it only has 14 rooms, or maybe due to its decoration, or maybe even due to its rich history. The hotel also possesses an internal courtyard hidden away inside the building that encourages guests to relax and soak up the calm of this setting loaded with romance.
The stately home was constructed inside the walls of Castelo de São Jorge, on the site of the former kitchens of Paços da Alcáçova [Alcáçova Palace], during the second half of the eighteenth century. This is the reason why it is still known today as Palacete das Cozinhas [the Kitchens' Stately Home].
The Palacete das Cozinhas covers two floors and a garret, and includes a courtyard and gardens. The Palacete das Cozinhas still contains the remains of medieval infrastructures, such as the tank - which would have been part of the Paços da Alcáçova's support buildings.
The stately home building is a mixture of the rationalist Pombaline style - the sombre window frames and frame around the main door - with other more liberated styles - such as the elaborately worked finish of the wall attached to the main façade´s gateway, which contains the inscription "1765", the probable date of construction.
The stately home was transformed into a hotel and given the name Solar Do Castelo. The building, which has been declared to be of significant historical interest, is today reborn by means of a high quality modern project.
The Hoteis Heritage Lisboa chain also includes, besides Solar Do Castelo, the As Janelas Verdes, Hotel Britania and Hotel Lisboa Plaza hotels, installed in buildings that are characteristic of the city and which are imbued with tradition and well-being. The main objective of this small chain of hotels is to provide visitors' first contact with the city's atmosphere and its customs while still inside the hotel building, not limiting such contact to the other side of the hotel's main doors. |
